Matthews Design Group Helps “Make” St. Augustine
A local company that started with only three people almost 12 years ago has now grown to a 30-person civil engineering, design and consulting firm that quite literally helps “make” a lot of St. Augustine.
Matthews Design Group has worked on a variety of projects including Diane’s Market, River House, Ice Plant, SJC Health and Human Services, Flagler College dormitories, the St. Augustine Bayfront Park and several residential developments - just to name a few.
MDG also has continuing services contracts with various municipal and government agencies including St. Johns County, City of St. Augustine, Florida Dept. of Military Affairs, St. Johns County Parks and Recreation and the St. Johns County School District.
Matthews Design Group is now the largest civil engineering firm based in St. Johns County.
But let’s get back to the three-person company that started it all.
After graduating from Clemson University with a Masters in Civil Engineering, Rob Matthews married his college sweetheart, Keri, an industrial engineer. Together, they began their individual careers at firms in Charlotte, NC. On a whim (inspired by a vacation in Hawaii), they decided to make their desire to live by the ocean a reality and moved to St. Augustine.
Once in St. Augustine, Matthews knew he wanted to create a unique engineering company that combined the best aspects of firms he had worked for with his innovative, fresh ideas. His vision was - and still is - to make MDG’s clients’ projects successful by providing the best talent. To Matthews, retaining this talent at his firm meant providing them the best possible work environment.
So, Matthews created a professional, yet fun-spirited place to work. A workplace where employees feel valued, respected and empowered. Matthews believes this positive work environment translates into positive relationships and creative solutions for clients.
Obviously, it’s working. MDG was recently recognized in Jacksonville Business Journal’s “Best Places to Work” and “Fast 50” for growing firms. The Zweig Group recognized Matthews Design Group on a national level as “Best Firm to Work For” and “Hot Firm” for growth.
Matthews also believes in supporting the community MDG serves. Matthews Design Group has donated services to non-profit projects such as the Boys & Girls Club, SAYS Youth Services, Alpha Omega Miracle Home, The Therapeutic Learning Center, tag! and many more.
In the spirit of giving back, MDG is a proud sponsor of Made in St. Augustine®. Be sure to visit Matthews Design Group’s Junior Made Station at the festival!
