Slow Food First Coast: Moving Toward a More Delicious and Sustainable Future
Good. Clean. Fair. Food for all. These are the core values of Slow Food First Coast.
What does that mean? Let’s take a look.
Good
The word good can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. For Slow Food, the idea of good means enjoying delicious food created with care from healthy plants and animals. The pleasures of good food can also help to build community and celebrate culture and regional diversity.
Clean
When Slow Food talks about clean food, they are talking about nutritious food that is as good for the planet as it is for our bodies. It is grown and harvested with methods that have a positive impact on our local ecosystems and promotes biodiversity.
Fair
Slow Food believes that food is a universal right. Food that is fair should be accessible to all, regardless of income, and produced by people who are treated with dignity and justly compensated for their labor.
Slow Food First Coast was established in 2007 as a 501c3 nonprofit organization committed to strengthening the connection between local food, strong farms and healthy communities on Florida’s First Coast.
As the local chapter of an international movement founded by Carlo Petrini in 1986, Slow Food First Coast is a proud member of Slow Food USA and joins a global network of chapters in more than 160 countries worldwide who are working to transform the way we produce, consume and enjoy food. Slow Food aims to counteract the effects of fast food and fast life.
Slow Food also works to save disappearing food traditions and traditional food products, to help people rediscover the joys of eating, and to understand the importance of caring where food comes from, who makes it and how it’s made. Slow Food values food produced locally and recognizes its use.
It seems only natural that Made in St. Augustine has partnered with Slow Food First Coast to help showcase our local restaurants, chefs and farmers as well as increase awareness and educate the public about the Slow Food movement. Several Made in St. Augustine’s participants already are members of Slow Food First Coast including Claude’s Chocolate, Dog Day Gardens, Kookaburra, Rype and Readi, St. Augustine Distillery and The Hyppo.
These members are some of the 17,000 individuals nationwide who are committed to changing the food system for the better. Slow Food celebrates the delicious tastes of our nation, honors the unsung heroes of our tables and brings together those committed to make a difference in our food system.
